What is art?
This is an interesting question to ponder....
I'm not asking for the official definition like one found in a dictionary, but rather where should the line be drawn between art and non art? Does art need to be beautiful or eye appealing? Does it need to be man made? Does it need to communicate something? Does it need to be original? Does it need to be intentional or have a purpose? Should it be made with specific kinds of materials?
Edger Degas, an impressionist artist, once said, "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Does this idea impact where the line should be drawn between art and none art?

The Star (fig. 1) is an impressionist painting by Edger Degas. Although many people would "see" or interpret the painting differently, most would agree that it is an example of art.
The three images below are also made of paint. Are they all examples of art as well? Or should should a line be drawn somewhere. If it should, WHERE should it be drawn? Or should no line be drawn? It would be easy to say that "everything is art" so we don't have to define art or draw a line, but is that really true?

Now it's your turn....
Tell me in several sentences what you think art IS in the comment section below. Make sure your "definition of art" is thoughtful and addresses where you think the line should be drawn between art and non art. Also tell me WHY you think this. (If your comment meets all of the above requirements, you may record 15 minutes on your positive class participation log.)
