- Start looking for a photo that you can use for this project. It must have clear foreground, mid-ground, and background. It must also show great depth so you can use atmospheric perspective techniques.
Friday April 24th
Read and take notes on this article about the ways to create Atmospheric Perspective in a Painting
- Ultimate Guide to Creating Atmospheric Perspective
- Review the page on atmospheric perspective from the document above that you read yesterday. Add anything else to your notes on atmospheric perspective that was not covered in the article.
Monday April 27th
Learn about Atmospheric Perspective (also called aerial perspective) along with some good painting techniques for landscapes with watercolors by watching these two video clips:
- Aerial Perspective
- Painting Distance and Depth in Your Watercolor Landscapes
- Be prepared to take a quiz over Atmospheric perspective tomorrow.
Tuesday April 28th
- Log in to Edulastic.com by clicking on Log in and then the Sign in with Google button (always sign in this way)
- Review your notes, the above article, video clips, and the atmospheric perspective information in the project introduction document as needed. Then take the Atmospheric Perspective Quiz on Edulastic
Wed April 29th
- Find the landscape photo that you would like to use as a reference for this project.
- Email it to me today at [email protected] Put Landscape Reference Photo in the subject line of your email. This is for a grade so make sure you email me your photo.
- Remember, it must have clear foreground, middle-ground, and background. It must also show great depth. One way to tell if it has good depth is to see if you can identify atmospheric perspective techniques in the photo--the more you can see the better! Refer to the example watercolor landscape paintings in the project introduction file from April 23rd
- Try a Bing.com image search if you're not finding anything on Google
- You can also try Pixabay.com which has many great images that can be used
- Read THIS to learn how to save, find, and manage files downloaded to your Chromebook
- I will be giving you feedback about this photo and will let you know whether or not it will work for the project. You will be starting your individual painting next week so try not to be late sending the photo to me for approval.
Thurs. April 30th
- You will begin your practice painting today. Click on the File below to see the photos for step 1 and 2.
- STEP 1- Get your watercolor paper that you used for the practice watercolor techniques for the last project. You will be painting on the backside of this paper. Find some kind of flat board (cardboard, plastic, etc.) that you can tape your watercolor paper down onto. If you don't have a board you can tape it down on top of a table. Use masking tape or painters tape if you can and overlap all four sides of the paper about 1/2". If you don't have masking or painters tape, use any kind of tape that you have. The taping down should prevent your paper from curling while you are painting.
- STEP 2- Sketch the general outlines for the landscape VERY LIGHTLY. See photo in document below.

Monday May 18th-Wed. May 20th
Thurs. May 21- Friday May 22nd
- For a grade, email a photo of your practice painting to: [email protected]
- You will now begin your individual watercolor landscape painting based on your approved reference photo.
- Your watercolor landscape painting is due FRIDAY MAY 15th
- Tape your last piece of watercolor paper to your board or table .
- While looking at your reference photo, very lightly sketch the main shapes of your landscape on your paper like you were shown to do in the practice painting. This does not need to be super detailed. Just the main overall shapes will be fine.
Thurs. May 7th
- Paint your sky. Consider using a wet on wet technique or blotting technique to create clouds.
- Paint your bottom layer wash colors like was done in step three of your practice painting. Let dry.
- Paint your background land or mountain area. Make sure your colors are cooler, lighter, and duller than the foreground colors. If you are overlapping mountains, the colors should get darker (less watered down) in the mountains that are closer.
- If your reference photo is of a sunrise or sunset or has a sky that is not blue, your background land may look less blue and more brownish gray.
Friday May 8th-Monday May 11th
- Paint your middle ground. Colors should gradually get warmer and darker overall. Refer to the colors in your reference photo when mixing your colors.
- Paint the main shapes of your foreground (details will come later) . Colors should be brighter, darker, and warmer than your middle ground.
- By Monday May 11th email me a progress photo of your painting so far so I can give you some feedback. This is for a grade. Please also send your reference image with this so I don't have to go back searching through may email to find it. My email is [email protected]
Tues. May 12th-Wed May 13th
- Fix any areas and make any improvements that need made based on the feedback you received from me yesterday.
- Paint more details in your middle ground and foreground areas.
- The foreground should have more details than the middle ground.
Thursday May 14th
- Paint the finishing touches on your painting
- Look closely at your photo to see what details you may have missed. Are there cast shadows that need added?
- If you have rough messy edges where they should look more smooth, work on trying to smooth them out.
- YOUR PAINTING IS DUE TOMORROW!
