Introduction to Interior Design Dream Room Project
- THE BIG IDEA: You will be creating a "Dream Room" after learning all about interior design by reading articles and watching video clips. You will be taking short quizzes along the way on the information you are learning using Edulastic.com. Once you learn all of the information, you will be using Homestyler.com to create your room digitally.
- Read the Project Introduction handout:

- Complete the Dream Room Questionnaire by interviewing the person you will create a dream room for. This can't be yourself. I will have to manually grade each question so your score will not be accurate until I do so. As long as you answer each question fully and in detail as needed, you will not loose points.
Tuesday April 21st
- Read the handout and look through the PowerPoint slides below to learn about the Interior Design Principles. They are very similar to the principles of design that we previously discussed in class while looking at poster designs.

Figure Out What Interior Design Style Will Be Used in Your Room
- Look through the following articles with the person you interviewed. Have them pick which interior design style they like the most. You can also search other sites to find what they like best or it can also be a combination of styles.
Monday May 4th
- Research the interior design style that was chosen yesterday using the above web sites along with additional websites that you find by using a Google search.
- Write down the following information for the style:
- 1. overall main characteristics of this style,
- 2. characteristics of furniture used in this style,
- 3. characteristics of accessories used in this style (pillows, lamps, rugs, etc.) ,
- 4. characteristics of artwork used in this style, and
- 5. characteristics of finishings used in this style (floors, walls, other architectural materials, etc.
Tuesday May 5th
- Login to your account on www.edulastic.com by clicking on Log In and then the Sign in with Google button.

Mon. May 11th-Tues. May 12th
Wed. May 13th
Thurs. May 14th
Fri. May 15th
Monday May 18th - Friday May 22nd
Open this page on another device like your phone if you can so you don't need to keep flipping back and forth.
- Now Login to your account on Homestyler.com on your Chromebook or laptop and create an experimental room by following the guidelines that you learned by watching the tutorial videos yesterday and by viewing the basic steps file today.
- Try to just work on one area of the room. Add at least one door and one window. Change the floor and the walls. Add a couple pieces of furniture and at least one light as well. It does NOT need to look nice you are just trying to learn how to use Homestyler.
- Save it as "Experiment" (click on Floppy Disc on Top Toolbar)
- Make sure the little camera/man is looking towards the area you want me to see. Try to have a window in this view.
- Next Render your room by clicking on Render on the top toolbar. Then click on Render again. It will open in a new window.
- In the bottom right side of this window choose an Environment picture to show through your window in the rendered photo.
- Then click on the blue rectangular Render Button
- Now Click on View Images in the top right corner of the window
- Hover over the rendered room image and then click on the Share icon (3 connected circles). Click on the Copy icon in the top right (looks like a paper clip). Highlight the web address and then click on the Control (CTRL) and C keys at the same time on your keyboard to copy the link.
- Send me this link by holding down on CTRL and V at the same time to paste the link in the email. Send it to me at [email protected] Also let me know in this email if you have questions about how to do something in Homestyler.
- Now click on View detail (hoover over your image) to see the Rendered version of your room. Quite realistic, huh!!!!
Friday May 8th
- You are now going to try to apply everything you have learned about interior design to create the Dream Room for your "client" (the person you interviewed). Make sure you incorporate what they said they wanted in their interview and the Interior Design Style that they picked. Review their Dream Room Questionnaire on Edulastic if needed. You will need to explain how the things they wanted were achieved in the room for your Artist Statement on Artsonia.
- Make sure you are creating your room in the order that I have suggested for each day because choices for a room should follow a particular order. The days also break down the creation of the room into manageable chunks. Try not to get behind! You will not have an extra week at the end to finish it if you get behind. It is due FRIDAY MAY 15th! You have to turn in your Chormebooks the following week.
- Login to Homestyler.com
- Click on your Icon in the top left corner and then choose My Designs
- Create a New Design (do not open your Experiment room)
- Create the walls for your Dream Room
- THE NEXT THING YOU SHOULD DO IS TO PICK OUT YOUR INSPIRATION PIECE! All of your other design choices should look good and be harmonious with this piece. It could be a piece of artwork, a patterned rug, a decorative pillow, clock, mirror, etc. Remember to make sure it and all of your design choices going forward fit with the Interior Design style that your person chose. Look in the Art and Decor section of the catalog (chair icon). Place this piece in your room.
- NOTE: You can try the Search feature to find things in Homestyler, but I have found that many things are not tagged well to show up in a search. It's probably best to use the categories in the Catalog to find the things you are looking for. The number of hanging artworks are somewhat limited in Homestyler so do your best. This is another reason why it's important to find your main inspiration piece now. You can make artworks larger but you may also need to repeat the same artwork(s) in a room (either side by side or on different walls) to fill up wall space later.
- Click on the Shovel icon on the left and add at least 1 door or wall opening and 2 windows. You may want to add more windows so your room won't be too dark when rendered.
- Add any other structural details that are needed in the room such as columns, beams, base board trim, wall moldings, etc.
- Make sure you Save your room when you are finished. Title it the type of room it is followed with "by your name". For example: Bedroom by Elana Brownfield
Mon. May 11th-Tues. May 12th
- Login to Homestyler.com
- Click on your Icon in the top left corner and then choose My Designs
- Open your Dream Room
- Click on the Chair icon on the left. Choose and arrange all furniture, electronics, and appliances needed in your room. Be sure to consider traffic flow, storage needs, proportion, scale, etc. Make sure you also incorporate the needs for the room stated by your "client" (person you interviewed).
- Remember, the search feature in Homestyler could be better. For example if you search for couch, two show up. But if you search for sofa 60 pages will show up. If you look through the Catalog categories and go to Living Room then Seating, you will find the sofas arranged in smaller categories so you don't have to look through 60 pages to find what you might be looking for. In addition, some things that are actually in Homestyler, don't show up in a search at all. For example, if you search for "ping pong table" nothing shows up, however, if you go to the Catalog and then go to Living Room and then Recreation, you will find a ping pong table along with many other types of gaming tables. For those of you looking for gaming systems search for "game" because it's not listed under Living Room Recreation.
- Make sure you arrange your furniture around a Focal Point in the room
- If you need to change the width, length, height, or lift (how high it is off the ground) of an object you can do this by selecting it and then adjusting the sliders on the right hand side of the screen.
- Click on the Paint Roller icon on the left, select your floor, and then choose your flooring (walls will be last). If you didn't add an accent rug yesterday under main furniture groupings, consider doing it now.
- The furniture pieces and flooring you choose should also look good with your inspiration piece and fit with your Interior Design style.
- Save your room.
Wed. May 13th
- Login to Homestyler.com
- Click on your Icon in the top left corner and then choose My Designs
- Open your Dream Room
- Click on the Chair Icon on the left. Accessorize your room with artwork, pillows, plants, accessories, etc. Everything you choose should look good with your inspiration piece and fit with your Interior Design style. Try to repeat colors to create Rhythm and Harmony. Try to use different textures and patterns to create Contrast and Variety.
- Save your room
Thurs. May 14th
- Login to Homestyler.com
- Click on your Icon in the top left corner and then choose My Designs
- Open your Dream Room
- Click on the Chair icon on the left. Choose lighting for your room from the catalog. Make sure you have ambient, task, and accent lighting in your room. Lighting should be created in multiple "layers" (or levels) in the room. Your room will look too dark in the rendered image at the end if you don't have enough lighting.
- Click on the Paint Roller and choose the wall color and/or material for your room. Consider having an accent wall that is different from the other walls. Make sure whatever color/material you choose looks good in the room
- Click on the Chair icon on the left and add all the finishing touches to your room to make it come to life! Do you need something to fill a corner? Try a sculpture, floor light, or plant. Put some accessories, books, magazines, or household items on tables to make the room look lived in. Could your bed, chair, or couch need some more pillows or a blanket throw? Do you have some blank wall space that needs some artwork or a mirror? You can also add people and pets to your room! Hopefully you get the idea. Put some effort into this last step.
- Save your room
- Your Dream Room is due tomorrow.
Fri. May 15th
- YOUR DREAM ROOM IS DUE TODAY!
- Login to Homestyler.com
- Click on your Icon in the top left corner and then choose My Designs
- Open your Dream Room
- Render your room three times by following the same steps that you did for your Experiment room. The directions for this can be found on the file and in the directions for May 8th. Move the camera to a different place in the room for each rendered image. Try to get as much of the room in as you can in each different view. Don't forget to choose an environment (should be the same one) to show through the windows.
- Once you have rendered your room three times from three different views, click on the Download icon for each image. This will save them to your laptop or Chromebook.
- Read THIS to learn how to find and manage files downloaded to your Chromebook
- Now upload your three room views to Artsonia by following the directions HERE. The school access code is RNJN-FBMJ
- Be sure to include a title for your room and answer all of the artist statement questions with much thought and effort. A large part of your grade will be based on how you answer these questions. You only need to answer the questions once even though it will ask you to do it for each image.
- You don't need to email me the three views, just get them uploaded to Artsonia. Let me know if you have any problems rendering, downloading, or uploading your room views to Artsonia and I will help you out as much as I can.
Monday May 18th - Friday May 22nd
- You will need to turn in your school issued ChromeBook this week.
- These days are also reserved for any student who was sick or who had technical difficulties getting their three room views rendered and uploaded to Artsonia on Friday. Please let me know via email if this includes you and I will try to help as much as I can.
- All late assignments must be turned in and projects MUST be uploaded to Artsonia by Wed. 5/18. Friday is the last day of school and the end of the 4th 9 weeks.
